GPs and PHOs in the Primary Care Sector
In the primary care sector, HSCR is an approved survey research organisation for the implementation of the New Zealand version of the General Practice Assessment Questionnaire (GPAQ) developed by the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre, University of Manchester and Safran/NEMCH. This patient survey is the best vehicle for measuring and benchmarking patient satisfaction with GPs and GP nursing staff.
The NZGPAQ database presently contains data from a number of PHOs, among which ProCare, South Seas Healthcare PHO, the Langimalie Tongan Society, Nelson Bays Primary Health and Waihopa PHO. This means that the database presently contains some 41,000 records over a period of five years from 150 GP practices in which 470 GPs obtained responses from 40,500 enrolled patients.
Accepting the reputable GPAQ survey with only some minor modifications permits HSCR to offer PHOs throughout the country a standardised patient survey system that generates accurate, reliable and detailed information on what patients think of the services received from New Zealand GPs. This in turn allows PHOs to increase the quality of care provided in their practices (see Handbook on Improving your Practice with Patient Surveys -PDF ).
Because of its widespread use, the NZGPAQ questionnaire (PDF) is now also available in Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Chinese and Thai languages. Please note that the NZGPAQ has been approved by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners for MOPS CQI purposes and can be used in the accreditation process.
